Hawaii Earthquake Damages Road to Hana Bridge
It turns out that the major 6.7 earthquake Hawaii suffered last week did more damage than we realized at first. It has now been found that one of the bridges on the road to Hana, which was built in 1911, has been severely damaged. So much so that the County has placed a concrete barrier on one side of the bridge and both tourists and residents are not being allowed to cross.
It appears that the bridge has been in need of repair for some kind. And many feel that it isn’t any worse than it was before the earthquake. The County already had plains to replace it and was going to be putting up a tempory bridge while the repairs were being made. But now, all of that has been escalated.
We didn’t know all of this when we met with one of our Maui weddings couples to give them their photography this morning. We are located in Haiku, about five miles past Paia and Momma’s Fish House on the Road to Hana. Couples often come to pick up their photography at our home/office on their way to Hana.
So if you are coming to Maui and were hoping to take the road to Hana, you should be aware that you can only go to mile marker 36. And you won’t be able to go to Hana either by taking the highway that goes down towards Kaupo.
You can read the recent article on this in the Maui News article about the Hana Bridge Closure.
